Comments kulturnav

Thanks for sharing.
I like the concept with kulturnav and its a good version 1 but I dont feel it works with todays Swedish museums/Europeana way of working...
A better approach is "ontology reuse" in the same way as Wikicommons has done by using a local Wikibase.... we have to realize that all networks dont have the skills doing good #Linkeddata and maybe an "open plattform" like Wikidata is better and good enough....

My experience of kulturnav

  1. to many SILOS when its a platform with an authority layer designed to avoid SILOS

    Swedish museums has problems speaking with each other
    and "reuse the same KulturNav id" is my experience after testing this with a project at National museum for female Swedish scultptors were we have objects in more museums. It was very difficult to get the Swedish National museum to add authorities in kulturnav and also other museums to say "same as". Now one knows how to also get an authority created in Europeana.... (seems also be a problem to error report to Europeana for museums)

    --> platforms that would be excellent for taking care of female sculptures that not always are relevant enough for Wikidata/Wikipedia fails creating authorities instead we send text strings and get musuem SILOS

    see my test NationalMuseet_Kvinnliga_skulptörer and a Jupityr Notebook showing how Swedish National Heritage Board UGC app during 8 years just attracted 100 contributors to add semantic value mostly just one or two items...

  2. creating new kulturnav items is nearly never done.

    When I see items in DigitaltMuseum we would like to link to in Wikidata I have asked people working with kulturnav to create new items e.g. from
    Nordiska museet

    I have always got the answer we have nothing today that match it i.e. what in Wikidata takes 5 seconds to create a new item is nearly impossible inside kulturnav as you need to contact people at the museums that I feel lack a #linkeddata vision/understanding. My guess a solution for museum people saying "same as" Wikipedia is easier than create something in kulturnav...

    Example when I suggested creating an Authority for an old Stockholm pharmacy Morianen (DM /Wikipedia/Wikidata) as we have more pictures in Digitalt museum I get a very odd answers

    that there exist no good data set in kulturnav today it would be possible to create the authority if it was part of VIAF

    for me this sounds as an answer from someone that doesnt understand how important authorities are.... and if Swedish museums should wait on OCLC and VIAF to get Swedish buildings addedwe have to wait forever.... --> lack of visions/skills for person in charge of creating a good working kulturnav.

  3. kulturnav dont scale we see mostly text strings in DigitaltMuseum
    I  did match people in a cemetery in Gävle with people found on pictures in DigitaltMuseum see blogpost
    Gävle Gamla Kyrkogård

    * 190 people were found on the cemetery and are now in
    #Wikidata
    * 124 people were found on a picture in DigitaltMuseum

    * 6 persons were found in kulturnav

    that means if Wikidata should link correct Swedish museums connected to Digitalt Museum using kulturnav then we just can link 6 persons out of 190 ....

    OBS Wikidata has also it's scaling problem that not everyone is notable enough see deleted WD records T240738 --> even more important that museum authorities like kulturnav are used and support museums better otherwise we just get "text strings"

  4. Things not strings

    the concept of kulturnav feels excellent and a Wikidata 0.1 and they have a working feedback possibility BUT when things are sent to Europeana its not things sent its just text strings sent --> all the work e.g.
    Länsmuseet Gävleborg has done with a photograph "Carl Larsson" is in Europeana said to be created by the artist Carl Larsson... its a good technical solution Digitalt Museum has implemented but it doesnt work when connecting 2 domains then they send strings....
    see blog Carl Larsson who is that - sadly Europeana doesnt know --> #Metadatadebt that is what happens when strings are sent....

Summary status kulturnav as an user

  • Swedish museums have difficulties speaking with each other about "same as"

  • people responsible of the aggregation to Europeana dont understand to use concepts like kulturnav they export and sends just text strings and Europeana starts "guessing"

  • a vocabularies management platform as kulturnav is to small and not developed compared with a faster growing platform as Wikidata

  • I guess more people understand WIkipedia/Wikidata so why not say in Digitalt Museum same as Wikipedia/Wikidata

  • Wikipedia is better integrated with Europeana than DigitaltMuseum  see report
    • we have links kulturnav and Europeana for more language versions in the Authority template"
    • I have matched all 160 000 people with Wikidata and also given the people working at Digitalt Museum those lists 6 months ago but no action...
about ontology reuse see tweet and video in Swedish below

DigitaltMuseum

some ideas to make DigitaltMuseum tighter integrated with Wikicommons and better supporty dataroundtrips plus a test if we can use a solution at deepAI and add colors of old pictures

See also Riksantikvarieämbetet UGC dataroundtrip discussion

  1. Dataroundtrip of pictures and find a de facto standard for image Public Identifiers

    Wikicommon object M37585218
    the daughter Brita Larsson = Q17480860
    sits on Carl Larssons = Q187310
    Same picture as RDF Special:EntityData/M37585218.json

    One big challenge is getting more people involved and add quality to pictures. In the video above we have Ontology reuse from a picture stored in Wikibase we can say that the object is the same as Wikidata Q17480860 and it is sitting on Q187310 . We also have relative position of the location of that metadata....

    Video explaining the concept/challenge in Swedish
    The data roundtrip dream

    When a picture is stored in Wikibase we get an unique identifier starting with M

    Challenge:
    is too have unique persistent identifiers we can use to identify image objects in more systems/platforms i.e. Wikicommons, Europeana, DigitaltMuseum, K-samsök....

    my understanding is that we now have an unique property for DigitaltMuseum Property:P7847 DigitaltMuseum-ID but I guess its not good enough we need to point directly on the physical image not an container of more images

    1. I guess we also need a simple naming schema like the Handle_System see how Welsh Portrait Collection use it T243907#5914827

      1. Welsh has Handle http://hdl.handle.net/10107/4671365
        1. ==> search Wikicommon for P1184 = 10107/4671365

          haswbstatement:P1184=10107/4671365 --> we get File:Portrait of Charles XII (4671365).jpg same as Special:EntityData/M70051666.json

          Special:EntityData/M70051666.json

          same as P1184 10107/4671365
    2. we need to say in Wikicommons that one picture in Wikicommon is the same as one picture stored in other systems i.e. Digitaltmuseum

      Wikidata Q83999684 is Sculpture Hjulsmide same as
      1. Category common: Skulptur Hjulsmide that contains more pictures uploaded from Digitaltmuseum

      2. In Digitaltmuseum we have 021026304051/gipsmodell-och-bronsavgjutning i.e. DigitaltMuseum-ID = 21026304051 that is 13 media files

        Digitaltmuseum JSON 021026304051 --> 13 media files

        picture 02349TDQuRhx should be stored in Wikicommons Special:EntityData/M86720202 as same as --> we need maybe a new property in Wikidata

    3. My guess:

      see also Property_talk:P7847 "dont we need the mediaId in Wikidata"

      1. We need a dataroundtrip between one M object in Wikicommons with the corresponding imageID in DigitaltMuseum

        not the DigitaltMuseumid as its defined today as it just just identify an container for more images not the unique picture

      2. I guess we need a new Wikidata property or even better that DigitaltMuseum start support the Handle system so we easy can point on the specific picture

        * one image 021026304051/imageId: 224011

        Handle is in Wikidata = Property 1184

      3. in DigitalMuseum we need an easy way to see the image Handle if that solution is selected

      4. in Wikicommons we must easier see the unique M number if it should be used by

      5. same as Europeana 916118/S_TEK_object_TEKS0012931 --> 13 media files I guess we have the same problem and should also have support for handle to point on the individual picture from one picture if we should do data round trípping

      6. Maybe we should better support "containers in Wikicommons" and connect pictures that are connected in e.g, DigitaltMuseum
      7. We should support the Handle system in Wikicommons i.e. a poicture in Wikicommons should be possible to access like hdl:2381/12775

  2. Colorize POC DigitaltMuseum
    see small test gist.github.com/salgo60 using a solution found at deepAI that adds colors of old pictures why not have a buttons next to a picture "Try AI add color" / "Try AI categorize"

    OBS havnt checked licenses needed...

    * Start picture is a DM picture

    * Manipulated picture is a picture like this

    Test 2
    * start picture dms-cf-04.dimu.org/image/042s93sZ6ZPs

    * manipulated  picture is
